*Mitchell Joins Navy Seahawk CompanyMichael C. Mitchell (left), 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mitchell of Pella, enlisted in the U. S. Navy’s specialSeahawk IV company in Des Moines last week Thursday.Pictured with Mitchell is Senior Chief Robert Lyman of the Navy Recruiting Station in Des Moines. Lyman is formerly of Pella, was employed at Sybenga Bakery before he enlisted in the Navy 20 years ago.Mitchell, along with ,73 other members of the Seahawks, was feted at a luncheon held at the Moose Lodge building in Des Moines last Thursday. Among' the many honored guests present were Governor and Mrs. Norman Erbe. .After the luncheon, the 74 Iowa youths had the oath of allegiance administered to them by Rear Adhural Johny J. Hyland, officially making them members of the U. S. Navy.Rear Admiral Hyland, commander in chief Atlantic Fleet representative to the Strategic Target Planning Staff, Strategic Ait* Command, Offut Air Force Base, Omaha, flew to Des Moines especially for the luncheon and swearing-in ceremony.Shortly after the swearing in ceremony was held, Seahawk IV departed via cab caravan to the Des Moines Municipal airport whore they boarded a specially chartered aircraft bound for San Diego, California.In San Diego, Michael will receive 9 weeks recruit training with the all-Iowa Seahawks. Upon completion of this transition period from civilian to navyman, he will enjoy 14 daysleave before receiving further training in a special branch of the Navy.
