Distinguished Flying Cross Is Awarded To P.O. Frank Burgess I1 One of Four Brothers In Uniform, PO. Y Burges# Is Believed to be First Drumheller Flyer to Win D.F.C.One of four brothers serving with i the armed forces. Pilot Officer Frank a Willis Burgess, of Drumheller, was i. recently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross following participation in the heavy bombing attack against Bcr-t lin in the last two months. Ir PO. Burgess’ citation read: r “In December. 1043, this officer was ). pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack B Berlin. On the outward flight one of, t the aircarft’s engines became useless, | the rear turret was put out of action and some important equipment became unserviceable.“Although the target was still some 250 miles distant PO. Burgess continued to the target and made a successful attack afterwards flying safely to base. His example of determination and devotion to duty was worthy of great praise. «“PO. Burgess has completed numfcr-Oua sorties and has .proved ,him*elf*to ie an efficient and understanding captain” |A native of Drumheller. PO. Burgess is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Clarke, and is 23 years old. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in the Fall of 1941. graduating as a sergeant-pilot at Yorkton, Sasl^. in December, 1942. He proceeded ove^eas in January, 1943. and was commissioned in Sept., 1943.The eldest brother, Corporal Roy Mason Burgess, is stationed at St. John, N.B.. with the R.CO.C.; Pilot Officer Raymond Burgess, a member of the R.C.A.F. for four years, is stationed at Debert. Nova Scotia, and the youngest brother. Corporal William Burgess is training at the Regimental School of Instruction. Calgary.Four sister of the family are as follows: Mrs. R.
