CROM THE SHERIDAN DAIIV ENTERPRISE we fitan there is trouble brew- tog m ttic National Guard of Ibis state. We ore sorry to leant (bat the political jaiae is extending Into the ranks of this splendid organization, bat what is sown, must be reaped, and it is btrt a short time tiitil the crop will be ready to be gathered in. The writer believes in promotion In the rank* and file of any organisation, on merit alone, previous service to be Considered, bat merit to stand preeminent at oil times in the shape of ability for the line of work to be accomplished. There Is something to military Hie at times, besides brass buttons, a blue uniform and standing beside the commanding officer’s side, while the boys pass in review. The state ttceds goad practical men at the head of every: unit, from the squad to the commanding officer, men with military trailing ud lodgment, that the mao who occupies the position of number one in the rear set of fours or any other number in the company or orgaaizaniott, may feel that the orders are the best for all concerned, and stands ready to risk life or limb to carry them out. Men who can take charge of a squad, company, batallloo or regiment, commaodtof them at the front when their services arc required. The boys of the state militia take a pride to the organization and would like to place it on a par with any otffcer similar organization of any other of tbe states, tad it? a shame that the political game is to be allowed to play havoc with the rank and file, and so long as It does, tbe thing will never amount to a tinker’s dam or be anything more than a bunch of tin soldiers on dress parade for some grand function of a chief executive, la Captain Parker of Sheridan, a hoy we played hookey at school together within years gone hy.we know would have made good with the rank of Major and a credit to the organization, a man well yersad in military draining in a practical way and would have bean pleased to see Arthur the recipient of the honors and command.
