CWRT Hears ! History Of 20th MaineThe Gettysburg Civil War Round Table Thursday night heard, at the site where it happened. how the 20th Maine, after running out of ammunition,fixed bayonets and chargeddown the side of Little Round Top to repulse flanking Confederates on the evening of July 2, 1863.Part of that story was how Co. B of the 20th Maine plus some Maine sharpshooters, came out of the woods on the side of the Confederates and provided the surprise that actually forced the Rebel unit to retreat in confusion just as it would probably have repulsed the advancing 2flth Maine units.The CWRT members saw the Co. B marker only from a photograph shown by Col. Sheads, The marker is in the woods about an eighth of a mile from the 20th Maine monument, and is “in copperhead country” Sheads reported. The members plan to return in wintertime to actually visit the Co. B. monu-ment.TO RESTORE MARKERThe 20th Maine was die extreme left unit of the Union Ar-my on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 and was part of Strong Vincent’s brigade. Several years ago the marker to Strong Vincent on the slope of Little Round Top was either toppled or fell and broke. Mrs. Barbara Schutt president of the Round Table reported Thursday night that the Round Table had written to Strong Vincent High School in Erie — named for the Union general, who was a resident of Erie, to see if the students there might want to conduct a lt;Continued On Page 2}
