Maine FeudingWith Air ForceCARIBOU —lt;/P) The seemingly insignificant matter of the kind of fishing gear in Air Fotce disaster survival kits is raising a fuss between the Air Force and the state of Maine.A Maine tish and game department warden roaming the wilderness came upon a five-man squad dropped into the woods on a survival test. Standard equipment includes food rations and a kit containing fishing equipment— gill nets and wire snares, both barred in Maine. To make it worse, the men from the Limestone AFB were at North Pond in the De Boulie area where only fly fishing is permitted.In Caribou Municipal court, the warden charged that three of the men fished with illegal lures other than unweighted flies, and that the two had no Maine fishinglicenses.The Air Force won't talk about the matter publicly but its view is that when it’s a matter of survival—test or for real—state fishing law's don't mean much. The state of Maine says the law is thelaw—change the fishing tackle.Warden Ernest H. Bailey, of Eagle Lake got warrants against Maj. Kenneth G. Herbert, James L. Thurman, Pugliesc Gu.seppe,Alfred E. Belgic and Robert E. Williams on June 3. The cases were continued until July 12 in Municipal Court. No pleas have been entered. The delay w'as granted to give U. S. Dist. Atty. Peter Mills a chance to rttend.
