Street name honours incoming 2PPCLIByMarcyNicholsonCFB SHILO - Second Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) soldiers step out of their four company groupings, many with Wooden pace sticks in hand, and surround a covered street sign.Maj.-Gen. (Retired) Robert Stewart pulls the royal blue fabric away from the sign, revealing Patricia Street to a round of applause,“It’s great that today I can put another footprint here in Shilo as we make another close and harmonious junction with another unit,” says Stewart, the colonel responsible for fostering esprit de corps throughout the regiment.The group, comprised mostly of the 125 2PPCLI soldiers who've already moved from Winnipeg to CFB Shilo, stood at the intersection of what used to be Engineer and London streets yesterday, the latter of which has undergone the name change. The nearly complete 2PPCLI complex sits at the comer.We look forward to integrating 2PPCLI heritage to this base, says Maj. The renaming of the street is quite an honour because these are not people who take their history lightly.Reiffenstein, officer in charge of 2PPCLI’s advance posting, moved to Shilo three years ago.Lady Patricia, colonel-in-chief of all of the PPCLIs, had intended to attend yesterday’s ceremony along with those conducted in 2PPCLI's honour inWinnipeg over last weekend, but did not travel from England to Canada due to an illness in the family.Lady Patricia Edwina Victoria Mountbatten succeeded her cousin Princess Victoria Patricia Helena Elizabeth ofConnaught and Stratheam — who later became Lady Patricia Ramsay upon marriage — as colonel-in-chief in 1974.The first Lady Patricia was appointed to the position in 1918 and died in 1974.mnichols@brandonsun.com
