congressmanFairbanks, Ind., June 20, 1881.Mr. Editor—We do not wish to write an article for the paper, hut it is impossible for us to be a silent reader of such infamous falsehoods as appeared in the Union of the 15th inst., concerning the murder of John Drake, of this place, on the 13th of July, 1864. John 'loan intentionally murdered on account of his politics, and it is so inscribed on his tomb, and nearly every republican in this vicinity upheld' the infamous wretches who committed the atrocious crime. The pic nic was not made by democrats, but by republicans, that those so-called “Union Men” might have an opportunity of killing some of the Sullivan county “Butter Nuts, as they so expressed themselves, and the democrats determined to depriyo them of the opportunity by remaining away from the pic nic grounds, which they did, until lato in the afternoon a report was circulated that the hyenas had gone homo, and some of tho hoys concluded to go up to the pic nic grounds and got some lonou-ade. They found them not gone, as reported, but in their wagons apparently ready to leave; but when they saw them coming they jumped outoftheir wagons, drew their pistols and commenced firing at the boys, who had already turned, and were running for their lives. The result of the firing, John Drake killed and John Clark badly wounded; and to oall men, who commit such deeds, “Union Men,” is enough to insult the memory of the brave Union heroes who' fell at Gettysburg, Antietum, and beforo the intrenchmentB of Petersburg and Richmond.
