Vuls., Baton Hocok, Louisiana,June 3d, 1864.Lditob Courier:* Having 9een yotir paper in camp of late which is pet used by all of the Madwomans with the greatest of interest and pleasure, but as yet failing to see any correspondence from this Department, I concluded to write a few lines for the benefit of all concerned.Our Regiment, which endured the fatigue and exposure of a march of seven hundred miles, through Western Louisiana, participated in the battle of Saline Cross Roads, April 8th. 1864, in which its loss was forty-seven killed, wounded and captured.The Regiment arrived at the mouth ofRed River, May 21st, 1864, inarched to Morganzas Bend, May 22d, where we went inic camp until the 28th of the same month, lt;7hen we eqihaiked on the steamer Universe for this place. ilere we went into camp on the 29th. Our Division, the 4ili, 13th A. C., is all here.The remainder of the Corps is at Mor-ganzas Rend.vS’e are looking fur marching orders daily Our destination is uncertain. Some say Carrollton, Louisiana, others say Arkansas Post, we are all very well satisfied with our present, camp, but it is always our luck to have byt a short stay where it is agreeable to us.The weather here is quite warm; hut weare acclimated and do pot notice the heat any more than we would in \\xa North—oras the boys term it, “Up in God’s Country.”The enemy is in our virin ty, but only in small force. Our force, at present, quite large, and ready for Mr. Rebel, should he at any time choose to call upon uaThere is quite a nice little market alt; this place, where eatables can be bought for nice little prices: Cabbige, 4(J@75 c.per head; beef, 40060r. per pound; butler, $1 00 per pound; eggs, 76 c. per dozen. We manage to get a little ice, occasionally, for 7 r. per p und.The health of our Regiment if quite good. Some few are complaining, but are not sick enough to cause any alarm.
