FLIER DECLARED DEAD—Word has been received by Mrs. H, M. -Phillips of 1918 Ave. N that her only son, Luther W. Tate, who has been missing in action for over a year has been officially .declared dead. Lt. Tate,' 33-24 Liberator bombardier with the 14th Air force, had been in China only a short time when he was reported missing...in' action on a sea-sweep mission May 26, 1944. On June 20, the wreckage of the plane was found where it had crashed into a. mountain about 100 miles from the base. Due to the nature of the accident, it was not possible to salvage anything Tirom the wreckage or to • identify any of the bodies in and around the plane. The - War department is of tbe opinion that none of. the crew could have survived the crash-. Lt. Tate attended Lubbock High school and was graduated In 1938. He received his basic training at Santa Ana, Calif.,• and won his wings at the Victorville bombardier school. He worked in Lubbock at the Coca. Cola. Bottling -companyi Survivors are Ms • mother; his father, M. • B. Tate of Slaton and a sister, Mrs. Alton Young' of Sah Bemadino. Calif.
