THE CAPTAIN OF THE RODDAM.Captain Edward William Freeman, of the steamship Koddam, which had such a marvellous escape on the occasion of the volcanic eruption at St. Pierre, landed at Plymouth on Wednesday morningfrom the West Indian mail steamer Atrato. Captair. Freeman, who left for London, stated that the eruption occurred within an hour and a half of the arrival of the Koddam at St. Pierre. Without a moment’s warning a tornado of fire swept into the bay. Captain Freeman bears on his handy and face scars shewing the terrible injuries he sustained. In an interview with a correspondent Captain Freeman said that molten material was carried far and wide, dealing death and destruction to almost everything. The Ruddam was surrounded with flame in an instant, and for all who failed to find shelter there was a terrible death.
