Klonowski, chief petty officer, United States Navy, to the roster of Blue Is- 1 land heroes of Uncle Sam’s service, a week ago. He died, along with 40 other brave lads, that our Navy might he prepared to defend our shores at any moment.Klonowski, whose home was with his mother, Mrs. Marie Klonowski, 48'/! Broadway was a member of the crew on the dreadnaught U. S. S. Mississippi, one of the largest of the nation’s fighting craft. He was in turrett No. 2, 14-inch gun battery, when a baek-fiare occurred, blowing out a breach of the giant gun and turned the iron turrett room into a white hot cauldron of flames and poisonous gasses. It was more than an hour before the turrett, the floor to which had been welded tight to the framework by the seethingflames from the explosion, could be opened. After a fire hose had cooled the iron cage, officers from the craft entered with gas masks and found the room turned into a giant death chamber, whose occupants were horribly burned and mutilated. The disaster was one of the most serious in the history of the navy. The Blue Island hero enlisted in the Navy at the age of 19 years in 1921 with his pal John Robaucha, also of Blue Island. After serving on the training ship, they were separated by transfer and Klonowski went to the U. S. S. Mississippi and there remained. He has been home once since his enlistment, that in June 1922.His mother has received official notification of his death from 1 the Navy Department at Washington. His body was scheduled to leave San Francisco Wednesday of this week, enroute to the final resting place in St. Benedict’s cemetery. Rev. Fr. Theo G. Gross will celebrate mass. He leaves, besides his mother, four brothers Joseph, Edward, William and Harold Klonowski and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Marx, Mrs. Anna Colletz and Mrs. Lucille Truschke.MAN KILLED BY GIRDERSROCK ISLAND, TUES.
