Owen of Company j B, is arranging for a practice camp to fee held at Nichols’ park June 2 6 and 27. It is the intention to make an effort to get recruits. The following is some history of the local company and the men who compose it:Company B. Fifth infantry, was mustered into service July 11, 1911, and has made an enviable record along all military lines. The officers and non-commissioned officers are as follows. It is due to their efforts that the company has maintained a high standard of efficiency: Capt. L. P. Owen has served 12 years in the National Guard and I served as volunteer in the Spanish-“Xmerican war.Lieut. Samuel C. Hunt has served , more than fifteen years and was sec-jond lieutenant of volunteers during the Spanish-American war.Lieut. Thomas K. Hale has had three years’ experience in the National Guard and k? bard study has become a very valuable officer.The Sergeants are Hugh Shepard, Luther Burke, Harrison Dickson, John Capps, Ernest Kelly, JosephPatterson.The Corporals are Roy Williams, Siddons Armstrong, James Stubblefield, Benjamin Prewitt, Harold Ma-ginnis and Elmer Flynn. They are all men of at least three years’ service.The standard maintained for recruits has been uniformly higher than that in most military com-nies and Company B has always gone to encampment with a very representative bunch of young men. In their armory they have equipment for 65 men. This equipment covers everything that would he used by a regular army company in active ser-_ Tice. The state provides one-half iand the government one-half of the, pay and equipment of the nationalguard.The company has looked forward for two years to the national pay bill, which will provide that they receive a small amount for faithful service and regular attendance at drills throughout the year. The bill has passed the lower house of congress twice, but has been defeased j in the senate, hut will undoubtedly pass in a short time, because ofunsatisfactory points having been removed at the recommendation of the war department.Jt has been the custom in citiessupporting military companies forcitizens to assist in different ways in developing the company. In some towns wireless apparatus has been donated at no small expense, dn other cities club rooms hare been supplied in the armories and furnished at the expense of the mer-h n! s.In other places outfits of china and silverware have been given the companies, but Company B to date has not felt the need of asking anything from the citizens of Jackson-The company is entering upon a campaign for recruits to develop the «?trength of 65 men, better drilled and more efficient than any company which has ever represented Jacksonville. To aid in this they are preparing to offer prizes, both cash and articles of wearing apparel to be competed for fcy individual members ■of the company and presented to them by Col. Wood, commander of the Fifth infantry, the last drill night before encampment.Also they are planning a practice march to take place Saturday evening, June 2t, and finish Sunday evening, June 27. They will march to Nichols park and pitch camp and mount guard on Saturday night.Sunday will be spent In performing all sorts of military duties, such as cIosh order drill, extending drill, pitching tents, stacking arms, mounting guard, cooking and lessons in sanitary camping.The state provides no funds for these practice marches and it is tie plan of the officers and the men of Company B to solicit funds, article* and food necessary to carry out this plan. It is the intention to ask mer oh ants and citizens for small amounts to bring about the desired results in the company and the committee of officers and men will visit the merchants on Saturday afternoon of this week.
