Haynes delighted the audience with a solo, the singing of which showed the artist to be the possessor of nn exquisitely cultured voice. The sortgs given by individual members of the company were much admired, but by far the most interesting feature of the programme was the rendering of the part songs already mentioned, which were very enthusiastically received. The troupe undoubtedly possessesvery superior culture, combined with a natural talent for truthful expres-ship. Equally true is the refusal uponthe part of the governors and othersto appoint all officers of Afro-American companies, brigades and regiments from among *ke colored people, as they request, unless Afro-Americans are appointed officers of white companies, brigades and regiments. Dozens of prominent and other white men of many classes have been appointed officers in the volunteer array service in the last few weeks who have far fess military experience, education, ability, etc., than manv of the Afro-Americans who desire to become commissioned officers of Atro-Ameri-can volunteer regiments.Harry C.
