The following was written by J. Merle Ante, in 1937, while he was a student at Hamilton Catholic High.11s entitled, “To Mother and Dad.1’“Since a time when I wasn’t so big or so old. “When I hollered all day and all night, so I’m told. *Tve been blessed with two pals worth their weight in gold.“Mother and Dad.“They were two wise professionals, they taught meto talk; . _ , •“They were two skilled instructors, they helped me to walk.“Oh, here's to the day that I walked my first block. “With Mother and Dad.“At school I got stalled and who came to my aid; consulted with Sister and worried and prayed.“Till in spite of my feelings, I passed all the grades: “Yes, Mother and Dad.“Mother’s Day - Father’s Day soon will be here. “Just one day for each?Well maybe I’m queer. I’ve three hundred sixty-five days in my year, for — Mother and Dadi”THOSE THOUGHTS arrived in the mail, the other day. from Mrs. Joseph “Mildred” Ante, 2213 Dixie Hwy., Hamilton, Ohio, 45014.Mildred wrote: “House cleaning time; and as I go over the many boxes I have of my children’s keepsakes, I always find something different each year that I overlooked the year before.“This little verse to Mother and Dad, my son wrote while in Catholic High School in 1937.“Meric was killed in 1944 over Brunswick Germany. He was a bombardier. So you can see why 1 hold his momentoes very dear.THE LIBRARY at the Journal-News discloses that Merle Ante enlisted in the Air Force at Davton in April, 1942, and received his wings in the bombardier school at San Angelo, Texas, July 15, 1943.In November, 1943, Lt. Ante wrote his parents of his safe arrival in England. For the next two months. Merle lived and fought side-by-side our British ally and completed a number of missions.U. Ante was killed in action, Jan. 30,1944, but it was not until Feb. 13, 1944, that he was reported missing. Later, the German government, through the International Red Cross, confirmed that the Hamilton officer was dead. ,His body was returned to Hamilton at the request of his parents and he is buried in St. Stephen Cemetery.“In this vale of Death, God girds us round; and over our gloom, the sun of Righteousness still shines a beacon and a hope.
