Drill instructor's visit was a valuable experienceI am Gunnery Sgt. James E. Adrian, the senior Marine Corps recruiter for north-central and northwestern Kansas. I am writing you to address the April 13 visit to Satina by Marine Corps drill instructor Sgt. Blue. I have received much praise from Marines senior to me about the success of Sgt. Blue's visit and would tike to take this opportunity to thank those individuals and organizations that made his visit such a success.First, I would tike to thank four fellow Marines. Sgt Blue for volunteering to come out from San Diego, Calif., to give his presentation and S-Sgt. Jenkins from Kansas City, who ensured Sgt. Blue got to where he needed to be. I would also tike to thank my two recruiters, Sgt. D.F. Ohl and S-Sgt. R.P. Dunavan. Their dedication, devotion and efforts are truly aweinspiring.At 4 p.m. on the 13th, KSAL News Radio 1150 and Rick Mach permitted me, Sgt. Blue, S-Sgt. Jenkins, and DeAnna Stewart from Herington, to be on their talk show. I found this to be a rather enjoyable experience and appreciate the opportunity. DeAnna is the mother of two Marines from Herington, Phillip and Jason. DeAnna, I know you were nervous but you did well and I appreciate the fact that you were in the sound boothwith us.*Special thanks are in order to the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy for the use of its facilities on the evening of the 13th. Capt. Furbeck, my liaison at the academy went out of his way to ensure we had a suitable location for both the presentation and the reception that followed. Semper Fi, Capt. The coverage your paper supplied was outstanding.On the morning of the 14th, KQNS 95.5 FM permitted the Marines to “invade” the morning show with “Brother” Ken. This, too, was an enjoyable experience and I thank them for the opportunity.I cannot forget to thank the young men and women that are in the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program that made it to the Drill Instructor visit. They had the rare opportunity to meet one of the Marines who will mold them into a Marine before getting to recruit training. I also thank the young people that showed up “just to check out the Marine D.I.” Their presence was an asset to the evening. Then there were the parents of the future Marines who attended. The questions they asked were valid, valuable and timely.I cannot forget to thank the behind-the-scenes people. Heather Adrian, Candy Dunavan, Linda Ohl, and Dee Miles, all did a great job in getting the refreshment together and set up for the reception after Sgt. Blue’s presentation.As I said, I've received a lot of praise for the Marine D.I. visit in April, but from this list of thank yous, you can see that others deserve much of the credit. As a Marine, I’ve learned that the success of the leader reties on the team concept and cooperation of those he is senior to. In this case, it relied on the cooperation of outside agencies, outside people, and my fellow Marines.
