“The big ten-mile bicycle race yesterday was an event nf unusual interest in Joplin, and several thousand people gathered along the entire course on fooi and in carriages to witness the test of speed, in which W. P. Cleveland was an easy winner in 30 minutes and 16 seconds.' The race was a hot one from start to finish on account of the large number of entries and the various handicaps which equalized the chances of all contestants. C. L Troutman and Robert Holmes were general favorites, but Troutman met. with an accident and was soon out of the race. W. P. Cleveland was a surprise to all, and the ease with w’hichhe won added to the surprise. Heset a hot pace from the start and soon took a lead that was easily retained to the finish. As he passed over the tape amid great cheering, Cleveland appeared as fresh as at the start He finished a minute and a quarter ahead of Robert Holmes, who came in second. \V. C. Troutman, jr., was third, and Harry Rogers, a 13-year-old boy, finished fourth.”
