Jones, 06I east First street, 'Spencer, was severely .wounded in France on Wednesday, May 29, according to a message recedved (here ifroan the WJar Department about six o’clock (Saturday evening, June 8.The department had 'promised to telegraph 'further information, but up to this 'writing Mrs, Jones had received no further word as to the nature of his wounds or the seriousness of his condition. Mrs. Jones had received a letter -from her brother on the morning of the day the messags telling of his condition was received. He wrote a cheerful letter hut said the war would not end until the German’s were licked. 'He did not seem to anticipate an early ending of -the war.Enlisted May 3, 1917Lee Hagerty is a member of Co. D. of the 1st Regiment United States Engineers of the 1st Division. He voluntarily enlisted in the Engineers at ■ Detroit, Michigan, about the 3rd day of May last year, less than a month 1 after the United States declared war against Germany. He left for over lt;seas on August 6 of last year.He was born on a farm near Peterson. He attended the Peterson ■ schools and later the rural schools, ' graduating from the Clay county i rural schools. Following a year ■ spent at Buena Vista college at 'Storm Lake he attended Highland college at ■ Des Moines, 'graduating from that in- i stitution. , ;, Lee Hagerty is known to hundreds ' over Clay county. He -has worked with his brother-in-law, Fred Jones, lt;on the dray line in Spencer and is ; well known here. It was about four i years ago that he left 'Spencer. Until r the time of his enlistment he was era- i ployed in the Packard and Chalmers automobile factories at Detroit as a \ mechanic.■Monday’s casualty list contained the name of Lee Hagerty along with i six other_ Jowans. Tuesday’s casualty 1 list contained the names of two lowans ■! killed and 33 Iowans wounded, degree unknown.
