Rastali of the WisconsinVeterans Home. a.civil war veteran,in a letter to William Hutson, recently told of his experience around the old Eldridge hotel. In 1856, VIr. Rastali in his letter told Mr. Hut-i'V '' m J' % : ■■ i' * K® : lt;i ^son, he helped to lay the stones for the old Free State Hotel and a fort was built around the basement of the hotel ruins, when it was burned May 21, 1856.Vfr. Rastali in his letter tells of building the fort in September 1856 as one of Jim Lane’s men. Hebruised one of his thumbs creating a felon, which a Lawrence doctor opened leaving a scar that he still carries.
