;xtTHE REUNION.The greatest military display seen la the West since the close oi the war, was the reanion of the soldiers and sailors of the Wisconsin, which began in Milwaukee on )ne | Tuesday, and closed to-day—Friday. It will be counted the greatest reunion that has been held in the United States up to the | this time. It wrs the first reunion Wisconsin has had since the rebellion, and this fact made the occasion one of the a~ | greatest attraction and deepest interest I Regiments hays held reunions but these .hardly satisfied the desire oi the surviving soldiers ; and at last it was agreed upon to have one grand reunion, in which all the regiments could take part, and to which the distinguished military men of the country could be invited, with the probability of their attending.This was a great undertaking, and considerable care and excellent judgment were required to carry it to a successful and satisfactory conclusion. The details were numerous, and the labor and responsibility exceedingly great. There haye been mistakes made, and in some directions mismanagement may haye been discovered. but on the whole the reaoiou has been quite successful. The camp grouod was not a desirable one, the ground being rough and the recent rains put the camp in a very bad condition There was also some neglect in procuring the necessary quantity of straw and provisions. Other details were altogether overlooked, and the delay of the Chicago Convention In making a nomination, detained General Grant so that the grand parade could not take place on Wednesday as announced in the programme. This was postponed till Thursday and the event was the grandest and most enspiring ever seen In the State. The day proved favor able though the forenoon was quite hot which made marching difficult for the thousands of veterans who have grown gray since 1863. But they endured the fatigue with remarkable fortitude, and while some were compelled to drop out by the way, the thousands remained in the column and completed the long march-The crowd that lined the street during the parade was never equaled m number in the history ot Milwaukee. The presence of General Grant and Sheridan was one of the memorable events ot the great reunion, and their reception was powerfu -ly enthusiastic. There wa9 one continual round of cheers from the time these heroes entered the procession at ten o’clcck till the line ot march was completed at halt past one.In the procersion were twenty-one companies of the Wisconsin National Guard, aod the part they bore all through the reunion programme was an honorable one, and the work they did and the manner 10 which they did it, deserve the hearties , applause, and will doubtless call forth a congratulatory order from the Executive.Take it all in all, the reunion of Wisconsin soldiers in 1880 resulted much better than many anticipated. Whatever there may have been about it which some may have felt like critlcing, is overshadowed by its numerous excellent points and the benefits which would naturally result from a reunion of army comrades.
