U01Os the Battle-field of Champion ^ ira( Hills, Mbs., May 19, 1863. j twlt;Dear Brother:—I take up my pen to I write you a few lines to inform you how 80 i we are getting along. Our Division has l2C been on the move nearly all the time since thi, I last wrote you, on the 9th inst, On the 12th McClernj)d*6 Corps moved towards ^ tho Black River Bridge, wkile McPherson nei and Sherman pushed on to Jackson, which nit they captured on the 14th. On the 15th the we reached Clinton, ten miles fVom Jack- 9U ' son, and Hovey’s Division turned towards arc ’ Vicksburgh,- we marched eight miles and ar( f encamped for the night. Early on the* morning of the lCth wo started forward tin ' again, marched five miles and formed into w* r line of battle. Skirmishers were sent for- a * ward and found the enemy posted in the on I woods on the hills. Owing to the ravines wc ’ and gullies, our artillery could get no good mi■ position to operate on the enemy, and the IS■ infantry moved forward to the attack with- W( out waiting for the reiufor cements to come us up. Our Division was moved forward in ^c:line, having no reserve. I suppose it was tr( about noon when we got fairly engaged. eir f The 11th Indiana, on the left of the 1sti brigade, charged upon a rebel battery of16e• six guns, and captured them and put three- rebel regiments, who were supporting it ^ ' to flight.
