Castleton.—A Doubtful Correction.—In the HehALD of tho 3d, “B W. B ” asks permission “to correct an error that appearod in the oration of Decoration Day, relative to the officers of Co. B., of the 2d Vermont Regiment.” The correction offered consists in substituting the name of E. A. Johnson in tho place of Henry D. Noble, as 2d Lieutenant of tho Company.,.I am not assured of the correctness of tliis correction.2. Tho oration says nothing about “Co., B. of the 2d Vermont Regiment.5' It simply states that on or about the 25th of April, 1861, a public meeting was held in Castleton village, at which time and place “Forty.oue men enrolled themselves as members of a volunteer company, and chose James Hopejfor Captain, John Howe for 1st Lieutenant, 'and Henry D. Noble for 2d Lieutenant.2. Tho oration does not say that these were tho officers of the company, when mustered into tho service and assigned a place in the 2d Vermont Regiment.3. Tho New York Daily Times, of April 27, 18G1, closes an account of the meeting in Castleton, above referred to, with these words*. “The officers of the company areas follows : Captain, James Hope ; First Lieutenant, John Howe ; Second Lieutenant, Henry D. Noble.”4. Capt. James Hope says the statementof the New York Times is correct. In the provisional organization of the company, at the meeting on or about the 25th of April, Henry D. Noble was chosen 2d Lieutenant. Afterwards, at the permanent organization, Mr. Johnson was chosenin plaea of Mr. Noble.This I suppose is the truth of history,and “B. W. B.” is himself slightly in error. Bwt, even if the report of the meeting at Castleton, on which I have relied, should prove to be wrong, the error is so trivial that I shall not regret having fallen into it, especially as it. has given “B. W. B ” opportunity to pay the fh:e tribute to the late Col. Johnson, which was due to the merits of that distinguished officer of the2d Vermont Regiment.
