•rThe attendance at the festival at Gray ® Hall, oo Saturday evftninij, for the benefit of St. Peters Church, was very large, the hall being literally jammed, and no doubt the amount takenin was very large The principal objectof interest, however, centered n pon the sword which was being voted for. The contestants were Adjutant J. L. Dignanand Capt. F. Hawkins. The balloting being open till fifteen minutes before eleven o’clock, and the friends of each party manifested intense interest. When the open ballot closed, Adjutant Dignan stood 252 and Captain Hawking 300 The chairman of the managers of the festival then stated that sealed ballots would be received for fifteen minutes, and that the managers of the festival had selected John M. Cook, Esq , a disinterested* party in every sense, to see that everything was done fairly. Mr. Cook then came forward and said that he felt highly honored in being selected by the managers of the festival to receive and count the sealed votes, and that he felt assured that everything would go ofi satisfactorily. He stated that it was no use to vote scrip and small bills, as he knew a number on both sides that were prepared to vote large amounts. The beautiful sword that had been selected, costing some forty dollars, would be an honor to even a General in the army. And whoever should receive.it would be highly flattered, not only by the present itself, but by the consideration of his friends in voting it to him ; and further said that the object to which the money would be appropriated was a good one, it being for necessary repairs on the church, and every one should vote heavily. Mr. Cook continued in a similar strain for about fifteen or twenty minutes, and every one could see that the audience was working diligently. The envelopes came up well filled, and when the time was announced to be up, everyone felt that the vote was a heavy one. The vote was then counted by Mr. Cook, in the presence of the managers ot the fair, and a friend of each of the contestants, and it was found that Adjutant Dignan hal 253 votes, which* beiug added to theopen vote, made his in all 501 votes; Capt. Hawkins had 366|t votes, which beiug added to his open vote made it 666J. Mr. Cook then came forward and announced the vote, stating that the contest had been a well fought one, and that the vote showed Capt. Hawkins was ahead 1654 votes. Three cheers were then given for Capt. Hawkins. Mr. Cook then said, that although Adj’t Dig-nan was defeated, yet be should feel very proud of his friends and bis own popularity, the vote being such a heavy one and being beaten by so small a number, and that he proposed three cheers for Adjutant Dignan, which were given with a vim and made the hall shake. Adjutant Dignao then presented the sword ou behalf of the managers of the fair to Capt. Hawkins in a few well timed remarks, when it was received by Mr. Cook for Capt. Hawkins in the same manner, stating that it seemed peculiarly appropriate for the sword to be presented to Capt. Hawkins by Adjutant Dignan. The sword realized the managers of the lair about $120. The managers returned Mr. Cook a vote of thanks for the manner in which he performed his duties, and no doubt much was due to him for the large vote. We have notyet learned the whole receipts of the fair. We should have stated that there were several other contestants for the sword, hut thev soon drew off the track.
