Iam glad to be able to fulfill my promise, although I feel my inability to do justice to the scene. At 21 o’clock to-day th* three companies from Quincy turned but in, full uniform (tor we are now uniformed) and at drew up before Adjutant s quartern, Comp. E. having on, ini addition to the uniform, the ^Havelock Cap,” presented to. us jy the; ladies (*‘Gol bless them”) distributed. last night, and received with three times three. After being drawn up, Col. Morgan mounted the stand, and after a few appropriate remarks read the.patriotic address of the ladies and presented the flag to Capt. (now Major)Tillson. He received it with a brief and patriotic speech,; when he made the remark that he knew the boys, and he knew they would never permit that flag to trail in the dust, but would defend it with the last drop of blood Col. Morgan said, “Boys, do you swear it ? If so, say yes,” It would have done your^ heart i good to have heard the'loud, and unanimous ’‘Yes,” that went tip from the boys, all withtears in their eyes And let the donors ofthat flag be assured that the oath will be faithfully carried. out, for no oath was ever taken with a deeper purpose. . The dimmed eyes of officers ana soldiers proved that the soul spoke although but little, was said. There is but one way in which wc can in any manner repay the ladies for their many kindnesses, that is by proving ourselves to be what they think we are, men that will sustain the honor of their country, and its flag. I assure you that if that flag ever reaches Quincy again, it will be because there was no one left .from there to carry it hack. I only wish I bad the power to give a faint idea of the cheers that went up, and the feeling manifested; your readers must let imagination do its work. This is a day ever to be remembered by the'Qnincy volunteers. And now to other subjects..
