Fielding has been liberated, according to information received by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. John B. Fielding, of Athens. He was first reported missing in action October 17, 1944, and then in March he was reported as being a German prisoner of war. He entered service in February, 1942, and was with an engineer unit in France.A release from the Fifth Army in Italy says that Pfc. Lee W. Cripe, of Athens route one was one of the 29 American soldiers who were freed by the English three days after the capture by the Germans during the Allied offensive which resulted in unconditional surrender of all Nazi for-ces in Italv.The Americans, members of the 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th “Red Bull’’ Division, were captur- i ed on the Fifth Army front at Caorso when a pocket of Jerries, numbering 700, retreated through their regiment's rear area.After walking 60 miles, crossing the Po River with their captors, the Yanks were released when the Germans, whose number had grown to 2,000 surrenderedto British tanks.They marched through Calcio and/J at the Po came under fire of theirown artillery and mortars. During the day they remained under cover with the Nazis, who feared American air attacks.Abandoning their vehicles at the Po, the Jerries built rafts and ferried across the river.Two British officers in a jeep drove near, dismounted and advanced with a white flag. They told the Germans they were surrounded by tanks, which would open fire if the Nazis did not surrender.
