SOLDIER’SLETTERSVance Payne writing to the Tribune Editor.Fort Snelling, Minn.Company L Cant.May 31, 1918.Mr. Wiley:*Aa this is a great treat to a soldier, 1 take great pleasure in giving my experience as I now see it in the army. It is surely a fine life. He must keep neat and clean, orderly at all times. No doubt it will interest you more ih the country th rough which I havepassed. We left Huntington direct for Columbus Barracks, Ohio. It is a fine place, but it is only a distributing camp. A bunch only stays here practically about a week. Then they are shipped to all places in theU. S. It has a fine Y. M. C. A., but they are bringing in more men than they can quarter nicely. On Tuesday May 21, a bunch was ordered to Fort Snelling, Minn. 1 happened to be one of the lucky men. We started about 3 o'clock from the Union Station at Columbus. About 6 we were entering Hartford City and Marion, our home towns being near, we could not help but think of Home Sweet Home. It was a shame butwe went through Chicago about midnight, but still we saw a great sight in the morning. We travelled along the Mississippi River for 350 miles and could see mountains on both sides almost all the way. In some places caves were built in the side of the mountains, a good place for robbers, thieves and in some, little towns were built on the side of it. On the river were ferryboats, tugs, and small steamships. After so long we reached St. Paul. What I saw of it was very fine, but then I was on guard duty and could not notice much of it. So I have seen some real soldier life. We were then tranferred across the river to its city, Minneapolis and then switched the Cantonment. It issurely a fine place here. I am nowin the Y. M. C. A. where all kind of amusement, such as books, music, moving pictures are provided. We have a fine bunk house too. It is big enough for about 60 men. It is sandy here and rains almost every day. So we have lots of sweeping to do. As this is a legal holiday our commanding officer let us off and we have nothing to do but eat and stand retreat this evening. Well I am nearly at an end, so write. Tell me about the businessvdown there at Warren. The business here is great. Leaving myaelf in the best of health, I hope to remain, a3 ever, with a friend in Warren.Yours,Vance A. Pavne.
