The guns for which they had fought so hard and bravely weregone. Two days before, it was learned, after heavypounding from the Air force, the guns had been moved six miles inland.Miller and his Company D continued to assist the invading forces for the next week and advanced their lines 10 to 12 miles inland, before they were called down the coast to execute a clean-up mission on the Brent Peninsula, which had been cut off from the rest of the German Army.THAT WAS the function of the Rangers — to take the “volunteer” missions — and the casulaties.“Everyone in the Rangers was a volunteer and could be transferred out at anytime,” said Miller, “but they elected to remain because the Rangers were the fiercest, finest, besttrained fighting men in the U.S. Armed forces.Patterned after the British Commandos, we considered ourselves a cut above even the Marines.“Our company was reduced by 40 and 50 percent several times, but they would just keep sending us fresh Rangers.”It was impossible to estimate the kill record of the Rangers, but in the[Continued on Page 2]
