SPIRIT LAKE BEACON, SPIRIT LAKE, IOWA, JUNE 5, 1924; History of TheSpirit Lake Chapter Service Star Legion;etBy Mrs. W. F. Wright, Historian Dickinson County lies In the northern tier of counties, bordering on Minnesota, having an urea of about four hundred square miles, eight per cent being covered by our Lakes. When President Wilson declared war with Germany, on April 4th, 1917, both the Senate nnd House of Representatives adopted the resolution on April 6th. by an overwhelming majority, that was American Spirit, and when the President called for troops, Dickinson sent six hundrtxl nnd twenty four gnlant. hoys, the flowers of /Imorlcan manhood. Deep In those boys m'others souls, was iho profound and revered knowledge that their hoys went forth with a faith in something stronger than people, an unseen, intangible presence, to which they turned, during those grim and awful solitudes preceding the zero hour when with sublime courage, and bared heads they faced tho Inevitable end. Twenty-four of those we bade good bye never returned, laying down their lives to make the world safe from the ravages of war.Wo had no selfish ends to serve, no conquests, no diminion, no indemnities, no compensation, for the lives sacrificed. We stood only for the unbiased rights of all mankind, during the ensuing months. The sacred service flag, containing, one. two. three, or four stars, hallowed the window panes of our boys homes, telling the passers by, that our sens had gone forth to make tho world purer and better, \The stars In the windows formed a living vital, chain, they were made up of your sons and mine, linking the women of all classes, and all creeds in one great common sisterhood. Thc-y were as g;cat a levcler us “The Griin Reaper” ;-\*i::h:g the Shephor-l’p crook besides Th? King's Scep:.»r.”After,months of awful sacrifice, came tho signing of the Armatlce.Mrs. J. C. We voted to leave Tlmpe post $300 at compound interest with which to buy them a piano as a memorial offering from our chapter. We placed $42.00 in their care at compound Interest with which to replace the flags upon our World War graves as they became soiled.
