Sabbath — Culinary Department—Notes—Incidents— The Sth Regiment, etc.Camp Dennison, Sunday, June 2.We were favored yesterday with our firstsummer shower, which settled the dust, andfewgoinjthe ite m pthis morning the Sabbath opened finely. Inconsequence of the extreme heat in the middle of the day a majority of the soldiers remained in their quarters. Being excusedfrom the week day drill, many of the volun-roam through the forests, and, sittingtaut.no a]thatout rsoletbeneath some stately tree, listen to Nature ssweet warbles and look with admiration uponthe beautiful prospect presented to the view.To-day we have had no preaching in the 8thand, with many of us, the Sabbath has thuspassed pleasantly away.On Saturday, through the politeness of WTMullen, we were shown through the CulinaryDepartment of this encampment. Perfect order and neatness seemed to reign throughout. The building is 140 feet in length and 40 inwidth, is well ventilated and furty men areemployed in baking. A firm in Cincinnatih is the contract for furnishing the flour, andR. A. Cooper, of the same city, the baking.Sixty barrels of flour are consumed everyday. Each loaf weighs two pounds and twoounces, and is the ration of two soldiers. Sixthousand loaves are turned out daily. A wellhas been sunk in the interior of the buildingfifty-five feet deep. There are six large ovenranges, with all the conveniences of an extensive bakery, beneath which a fire is constantly burning, and each oven bears a veryeuphoneous title. No. 1 is ‘‘General ScottNo. 2, ‘‘Fort Sumter,” No. 3, ‘‘Mount Vesuvius;’’ No. 4, “Nil Deeper andum f No. 5, “Prin-0P88 Alice;” No. 6, ‘‘Jerusalem. In front ofwhich was of but little service, and the nameof “Jeff. Davis” was given to it, with a picturesque view of the old traitor with hemparound his neck. Slaughtering establishmentsshall soon have everything handy. The breadis now of a good quality and fresh. We areafraid, however, that if the force here is soonstarted for Virginia, our contractor will notcoin as much money as he anticipated. ThisDepartment also supplies the Sutlers and provision stores outside of the regiments withcakes and pies. The Sutler of the 3d Regiment has resigned, for some of the companieshad threatened to “clean him out. ’ There isa brisk competition going on between themand the provision stores, and the Sutlers ofthe several regiments are doing all in theirpower to dislodge them. A Sutler is one whoattends an army to sell provisions, or in plainwords it is a “shaving shop,” where the soldier may dispense with his small change, aswell as his wages. As we were passing through the Cincinnatiregiments to-day, we noticed parties of ladiescontinually arriving with baskets of provisions, and a goodly number were young ladies.Man ha9 never yet engaged in a glorious enterprise but what he had the sympathy andaid of the ladies, and our past history, as wellas the present, but verifies it.On passing through the 5th regiment, wedrew up in front of Company I, FranklinGuard?, of Cincinnati. This company is composed of Printers; the Foreman of the GizetteArmstrong is Captain, and John Collins ofthe Enquirer, is 2d Lieutenant.Last night the Captain of the Guard rushedupou one of the gentry of the 8th regimentWith a club, and demanded the countersign iin his fright the guard gave the word “Grafton” and was marched off to the guard housein “double quick.” Many anecdotes are toldone occasion, with two passes of his sword, hewrenched the bayonet from the musket andin (he terror of the moment the sentry droppedit. On another occasion a sentry let him approach so near that he found himself minusarms and took to hie he*ls.This afternoon about 4 o’clock, a battery ofsix cannon, 5, 6 and one 8 pounder, with 140men and 80 horses arrived amid the cheers ofthe soldiers, from Detroit, and are encampedon the east side of the railroad. Capt. Loomishas command. The 8th yesterday received their pantaloonsand hereafter we shall have the pleasure ofseeing more of the SanduskyGuards on “dressparade.”Capt. Pierce, of the Medina Guards, returnedSaturday with 18 new recruits, which willmake his company up to 08.Most of the Regiments “ hold their own.”Many of the companies of the 8th will lose, butthere will be enough recruits to hold on to theorganization. The present week will provean important one in many respects. No one in the 8th can blame either the Captains of the several companies or the Colonel, for the tardiness in regard to uniforms. They* have done all in their power for the comfort ofthe volunteers. There is a power “behind thethrone,” and some one in the future will bebrought to account.
