Merrill’s Marauders in the Burma campaign.“Many are the times we were outnumbered by the enemy,” he says, “but our veterans from seasoned outfits who had fought in almost every Southwest Pacific battle would fight them to a stand-still.”A scout for the famous American fighters, Private Cavazos was feeling out an enemy position in Myitkyina last June. Sun-denly a Jap hand grenade exploded near him, fragments piercing his left hand. Jap bullet entered the left side of his chest, coming out through his back. He crawled back a distance of 75 yards and lay still until medics came and administered first aid.He was awarded the Purple Heart and is now receiving treatment at William Beaumont General Hospital here, one of the Army's finest.Son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesus Cavazos of 1216 Willow St., he entered the Army, Aug. 17, 1943 and went overseas in April. 1944.He wears the Asiastic-Pacific ribbon, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and his unit citation.
