Glen L. Heryforlt;J, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Heryford, 120 West Duryea avenue, Peoria Heights, is reconnaissance troop in the liberation of Luzon. Sergeant Heryford, awarded the Purple Heart at Wakde-Toem in New Guinea, has beenawarded tne Oak Leaf Cluster.Heryford was with the Recon spearhead that led the Infantry toNaguillian on the road toBaguio when he was wounded by' bursts from a machine gun. In this' drive to Naguilian his jeep was temporarily knocked out by large-pieces of shrapnel, but in turn the jeep crew killed three Japs, one an officer.Heryford was one of the first American soldiers to contact guer-c.f(rilla units in San Fernando, an im-portant harbor city on Luzon’s west coast. While scouting the road to San Fernando, enemy mortar and machine gun fire was encountered and returned by the sergeant’s platoon with the support of artillery. Fifty dead Japs were counted the next morning by advancing troops In a dismounted operation in the mountainous terrain, five miles southeast of Baguio, Heryford’s platoon underwent a fierce night Banzai attack. In the face of a superior number of the enemy and a hall -of mortars, grenade, and machine-gun fire, the platoon doggedly held -positions throughout the jnight.“WiffiHlaJhd 'Scouts’”s (g1He entered the Army in March 1942, and went overseas with the Recon troop to the Center Pacific -in Jul^ rST?3.* -received intensive jungle v training in Oahu and then went to New Guinea where he volunteered for the Alamo Scouts.While a Scout he worked exclusively behind the enemy lines in Hol-landia and at Wakde-Toem to observe Japanese activity and to lay ambushes for enemy patrols.. Heryford then rejoined the Recon troop to take part in the second battle of Morotai, W the Moluccas islands.Heryford i^radtiate' jrt-Manual Training High school where he was active all four years in football. Before entering the Army he was ■working at the Crown liquor store. His wife Betty, is managing their B G grocery store, at 600 Blaine st. Heryford intends to enter medical school after the war is over in the Pacific.
