Mayor IsResigningOffice NowCommissioner Is Succeeded By Eleanor Ely And Defense Director To Be NamedTo enter the military service of the United States, William N. Growden today resigned as United States Commissioner for the Fairbanks Recording district, as Mayor of Fairbanks and as dlireetor for Civilian Defense in the Fairbanks area.The resignations •will become effective at midnight tonight.Mr. Growden’s successor to the commissionership is Mrs. Eleanor Ely. She was appointed today by Judge Harry E. Pratt of the United States district court for the Fourth Division. Mrs. Ely has ‘been deputy recorder in the commissioner’s office for the past three years.Deputy RecordershipTo the deputy recordership Mrs. i Francis F. Baker, who lately has been employed as a clerk in the commissioner’s office, will probably be appointed by Mrs. Ely.'Mr. Growden’s successor to the mayoralty will be elected by the City Council. The mayoralty term expires next April.For successor to the directorship of Civilian Defense Mr. Growden has recommended Dr. S. N. Bred-2ie, who is chief of the air raid wardens in the Civilian Defense organization, The Civilian Defense director is appointed by Gov. ErnestH. Gruening.WILLIAM N.
