Thompson Awarded Air Force Flying CrossTOPEKA, Kan.— U.S. Air Force Captain Norman Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Thompson of Bedford, Pa., has received the Distinguished Flying Cross for aerial achievement in Southeast Asia.Captain Thompson distinguished himself as an AC-119 navigator when he provided support for a large river convoy that had been ambushed. Disregarding intense antiaircraft fire, he located the hostile positions, coordinated with the convoy commander and accurately directed his aircraft’s firepower which silenced a mortar and caused heavy enemy casualties.He was presented the medal at Forbes AFB, Kan., where he is now a C-130 navigator with the unit of the Tactical Air Command. TAC provides combat units for air support of U.S. ground forces.Captain Thompson, a 1962 graduate of Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy, earned his B.S. degree at Stetson University, DeLand, Fla., where he became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha.TCie captain entered the Air Force in 1967 and was commissioned through Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, Tex.Barry D.
