RED MEN AROUSEDTREMENDOUS MEETING OF THE SIOUXRESERVATION.After Eloquent Speeches by Their Chfefa They Vote to a Man to Refuse to Accede to the Recent Act of Congress—Chiefs’ Speeches.Standing Rock Agency, Dak., July 24 —All is excitement on the Sioux reservation. Never since the granting of the great tract of land to the Indians at the close of the Sioux war, have the Indians been so thoroughly awakened or the white settlers so deeply interested. It has been supposed by a great majority of the reading people that the Sioux reservation, containing 22,000,000 acres of land, was open tor settlement by the recent act of congress, but the clause making it necessary to secure the consent of three-fourths of the Indians may keep the land from the public domain for many years. The commission appointed by President Cleveland to confer with the Indians has arrived.Nearly the entire 5000 Indians of this igenc.v, are camped within two miles of Fort Yates, and additions to their numbers ire arriving hourly. Without regard to ;he merits of the proposition made by the government and with no definite undar-itanding of the proposed treaty, the ,ribes gathered here oppose the opening f the reservation. Sitting Bull is the inly well known Indian not present, and le will be brought. He left the agency tor a hunt, but it is believed that the sly ld trickster has been at work among the Indians of other agencies, sowing seeds of liscord and urging them to oppose the neasure.
