The Amoco Food Shop at 1600 East Broadway in Alton will be torn down and replaced byThe Telegraph/JOHN BADMANa store almost twice the size.tmoco shop to be razedrebuiltBy JIM KULPFor The TelegraphALTON — The Amoco Food Shop at 1600 East Broadway closed this week in preparation for a majorrebuilding project.The station will be razed and replaced by a new, muchlarger Amoco conveniencestore and gas station of about3,500 square feet, according to present store owner, SteveEdwards.Edwards said the store willbe taken over by new ownersfrom St. Louis, but he isuncertain if he will remain.The names of the ownerswere unavailable but city records indicate the permitwas taken in the name of Gary Rosenbaum and SteveGist.Edwards said the newoperation will be similar in style to a QuikTrip operation, containing eight gas pumpsand a deli, stocking such items as meat, milk and othergroceries.“It will be a modern up-to-date operation, with a bigger variety and more stuff,” Edwards said.He said the store/gasstation will be closed between two and three months, with a target date of Sept. 30 for reopening.Edwards has operated the 2,000-square-foot store for five years.The city approved thebuilding permit in June.
