They were on the extreme left and took nearly all shots, but not a man flinched nor left his place; two fell dead and seven were laid on the roadside badly wounded. In a short time the bridge was cleared, and the troops wentth rough and rallied on the other side. The order wus given to carry the hill at the point of tho bay ouet, and with another cheer the men went at it, and never was there a charge under such disadvantages so bravely made. The Woodruff Rifles, though on the left at the start, were among the fir9t on the top of the hill, Captain Austin leading the charge, and the flag presented to the company by the ladies of New j Albany, was the first that waved over the heights of JBarboursville. The enemy were I completely routed, and fled in every direction,I leaving guns, swords, uniforms, horses, strewn I all over the ground. Col. Neff immediately I dispatched Sergeant Crawford of Company B to Col. Woodruff with the intelligence, and asking reinforcements, as the rel»els were said to I be in large numbers a short distance from the I place, and he feared an attack. Col.
