Major Sedgewick immediately ordered his boat to land, and waited until the arrival of Colonel Woodruff, who, upon his arrival, ordered the troops to disembark, and dispatched three companies as an advance guard, to take possession of thetown by the time the main body came up. The rebels fled at the approach of the troops, and by 12 o’clock of that day the second Kentucky regiment had complete possession of the town.The day after our occupation of Guyandotte the Colonel learned that the enemy had fortified themselves in large numbers at Brrbours-viile, a town some seven miles distant. He at once determined to attack them, and at 12 o’clock that night he sent forward four companies, under command of Lieut. Col. Neff, to make the fight. At 5 o’clock the next morning they came in sight of the place, and found the rebels, some six hundred in number, occupying a large hill, in front of which was a large creek, spanned by a bridge, from the mouth of which tne hill rose up abruptly. When within one hundred yards of the bridge the order to charge was given. The troops, with a cheer, started forward under a galling fire from six hundred ritles in the hands of the enemy on the hill. Arriving at the bridge they found the floor entirely torn up, and they were therefore compelled to fall back again into the road, where they were for some time exposed to a very heavy lire. It was here that company B, Woodruff Rifles, suffered severely. They were on the extreme left and took nearly all shots, but not a man flinched nor left his place; two fell dead and seven were laid on the roadside badly wounded.
