Bresee of Champaign, a former resident of Mattoon, has invented an automatic parachute-opening device on which he has received final patent papers and which the army is now testing at Dayton Field, Ohio. The device consists of a timing mechanism on a plate attached to the chute. A cylinder on the plate, set counter-clockwise before a jump is made, automatically figures altitude and rate of fall and at a pre-determined height the chute opens.
