expubiwju, uui iw uiuj gu iuriu in nenancc, ior oor conviction* are honest. In Gen. Benning’s brigade there were example* of bravery n»ver surpassed.1 The General himself rode through the storm that came from thGse summits like a monntain torrent, perfectly calm, and the men had a noble example Of bravery, which they followed most explicitly, His horse was shot, bat the fate* spared him. Lieut. Col. William T. Harris, of the 3d Georgia, went before his men in that awfol gorge as if he were leading them to a parade. Col John A. Jones, of the 20 h Georgia, vhm a prominent example to every doubting heart in his command; bat he and Col. Harris fell in all their glorious deeds, to rise never again for our canse or for the delight of their heart-stricken families at home Everywhere, Horror had a great feast that day. Beside and in a little stream that forced its way through the gorge where the 17^h and 2d met the foe, ao many of the enemy and eo many of the Southerners fell that the water was tinged with the blood that flowed into it. This shows how desperate waj the fight. The enemy showed example* of bravery in that battle that they never exhibited to snch an extent in any fight before. We saw lines formed under oor terrible fire and moved np to our lines in the most daring manner, and It is said that some of oar troop* met them actually with the bayonet and but* of their guns. The Sixteenth Georgia engaged the U. S. Regulars in a desperate conflict of this sort, in which a stubborn fight ensued for the color*. The enemy lost the stand. On the fourth the cavalry forces of the enemy appeared on our right flank endeavoring to get into onr wagon train. Gen. Anderson’s brigade skirmished with them all day. Gradually giving way in the evening the enemy was drawn into our lines, and about 200 of this iorce were cut oflf entirely from the main body. Gen. Farnsworth commanded them, and upon discovering his situation attempted to break through onr lines. Every where a blaze of musketry met him. At last, dashing np in front of the bold l»t Texas, he was commanded to surrender; but he was a brave, daring man, and stinging under the mortification of being captured, drew a revolver and blew hi* own brains out. It was a pity; a Southerner would rejoice to honor such courage. All of his command, except what was shot down in the fire, surrendered, without followirg his example. At present Gen. La.e is fortifying himself, making his 2ine reach irom the Potomac to Hagerstown. It may be added that he is prepared to meet the enemy and to crosa his trains over the river at his leisure. The prisoners, about 6,000 It is stated, nave all been creased, end are now on their way k Richmond. The g?c§feBt difficulty occurred in takingour wounded oter, which bad been brought down from Gettysburg by the trains. The river rose to such a height it could not be forded, and many days of delay has occurred in getting them across, having only one or two small boats to effect the transportation. The river has not yet fallen suffl- . cientlj to admit fording, but if it does not rain, it will in a day or two. As it is, the enemy are *?illaround this army from the eastern side; but if Gen. Lee can get tuppiies,he can, in all probability, maintain himself until he chooses to cross. It is thought supplies are getting rather scarce, half rations of flonr being issued yesterday. Various rumors are being circulated about Vicksbnrg. Some say it has fallen, as they learn from Yankee papers, and others deny it trora onr press authority. We have jaet got a mail, bat the papers are old. Onr letters make us think we have come from the dead. T out-le-Mosdx.TT/\« A IT ItVn nv,lo PonpMOnlft.
