Then the engagement busted up. Three days before Wallace Best left for the ETO as a private in the army they met again, and became “almostengaged.”Yesterday Best, now an acting topkick, heard that some WAACs had arrived at a camp 60 miles away from him and asked if his commanding officer, Maj. William Buell, could find out if WAAC Mary Elliott was with them. She was, and the major gave Best a 48-hour pass and wished him luck.Mary and Best are now wondering if they can get married—it happened as quickly as that—and they already have the post commander, Col. Harvey H. Holland, going to bat for them, trying to arrange the wedding.Reunion in The ETO“When one of the girls said that some' body was waiting to see me,” said Mary,“I didn’t dream it could be Wally. But it was. He said, ‘Hello! Lib,’ and 1 screamed *Oh! Wally' and I threw myself at him.“i know a WAAC really shouldn’t do things like that, but I just couldn't help it.”Mary has very large blue eyes, and a very Suthun accent, and she was using both to great effect. Sgt. Best looked a little dazed.“They asked Wally to go to OCS back in the States, but he turned it down. He is going to go now—aren't you, dear?”Wally is going.No White Satin“I do hope we can get married here, and I want it to be a really nice wedding, after all I am giving up white satin and everything, aren't 1?”The sergeant murmured, “Me, too.”“You all know that when they woke me this morning I said, ‘So it isn't a dream i 0 after all.’ I am so excited.” f .Back to earth, it may not be as easy as all that. The case isn’t covered in Army regulations, and a lot of permission will have to be obtained before a precedent is established. But Mary says, “I can trust Wally, even if we have to wait.”
