They are brothers of a third Barrv. Claude K.' Barry Jr., who also served until he received his hon orable discharge after taking a prominent part in the war in the Mediterrenean.James Barry entered the si r vice Sept. 26. 1944, and after training at Camp Mood he land ed in Oahu in the Hawaiian islands on February 8. Here he spent 21 days in the hospital, with measles!During his illness his old com pany moved on and he was separated from it. He arrived in the Marianas in April and left April 31 for Okinawa.Assigned to the 7th division in the 10th army, he took part in the intensive campaign for that island, and was promoted to the grade of private first class.He says parts of Okinawa are very beautiful, or could have been, and tells of how the na- i tives farm every inch of soil. * The strange burial customs of | the Okinawans interested him ( and he told of how thev burv their dead, then dig up the bones j ] and place them in jars in elaborate tombs, and of having his ] tent near one. 1During the campaign he col lected several souvenirs, but 1 could send home only a sabre. \ Jap flag and money. He had a rifle, field glasses and two watches, also, but sold them because he could not send them.Pfc. Barry is now in a rest area eating good food in quantity and declares that his cot is much nicer than the foxholes he slept in for two months.Although he is slated for further service overseas, his ser geant is on his way to the U.S. and has promised to call his wife when he arrives.Pfc. Eugene Barry is serving with an infantry company on Cebu ,in the Philippines.
