HOOD, July 17-After six days packed with a variety of activities, the men of!’the 36th Division, Texas National j * Guard, rested up with weekend I« pastes in preparation for the sec- M ond and final week of summer camp.The command post exercise, conducted Tuesday for the t«2nd Infantry Regiment, was carried oii1 to thr enthusiastic approval ot all concerned, andthe men most actively involved in t’PX received the following afternoon off, The exercise, held from regimental headquarter* under battle conditions,concerned the movement ofmen.The three-day chemical, bio- ilogical and radiological (CBR)‘ school ended Wednesday, and a j j critique was held. The school i concerned study of gas, chemi-h cals. explosives, atomic radiation I j and fallout.Students of the CBR school from the Panhandle area included Lt. Don C. Oden and S F.C.%Laddie J. Ccrnohouz, both of HQ and Hq. Co., 142nd Regiment; Sgt, Robert W. Isaacs, Service Co., 142nd. Sgt. Guy D. Mills Jr., HQ. 2nd Battalion, and Cpl, Sammie Lundy, Co. H. 2nd Battalion. All of these oompanies drill from Amarillo.Sgt. Emanuel D. Burk, Co. E.liof Borger; Cpl. Larry E. Porter,!]Co. F, of Canyon, and Sgt James |lt;M. Turnispeed Co. G, of Tulia, alla part of the 2nd Battalion. 142ndInf. Regt., also attended the school.The men have adjusted to military ways and salutes are becoming more natural. Interior guard duty, a responsibility that every good soldier must learn, is becoming routine.Rain relieved the heat, but humidity was affecting some of the men from the Panhandle.Men from the 142nd attending bayonet training included Sgt. j 1 Raymond L. Sparks, Sgt. Billy B. Kimble, M-Sgt. Sam Bowen, Sgt. Merel H. Blakely, Sgt. Horace D. j j Carter, Cpl. Charles R. Sarchet and Cpl. Don S. Chattin.Actual firing of heavy weapons in which the men have been receiving instruction for the past year was carried out on Thursday. Among the weapons were mortars of all sizes, recoillegs rifles, machine guns and antitank rockets.Men who had not been through the gas chamber prior to this ramp got that opportunity Friday. After instructions on proper procedure for putting on a gas mask, the men en-r,| tered a chamber filled with tear gas. There, the mask was removed and a comparison made as to the effectiveness of the rubber face-piece.The 142nd was second in camp boxing matches, and also fared well in a swimming meet held Saturday.
