o--This is clearly an infringement of. our treaty rights; and the neighbouring Khan of Nawagai, added by the Chitral campaign to the long list of British feudatories in Asia, has claimed pro** tecrion from the Government of India. If the Amir cherishes any resentment for the failure of his son’s mission to England to realise his dearly-cherished hope of admission to direct relations with the English Government, he mayrepeat the aggravating tactics which brought usto the brink of another Afghan war four years ago. Sir Salter Pyne’s mission to Simla saved the situation then; and as he is new at Kabul superintending the erection of the extensive machinery which, after much delay and some damage, has arrived there from England, his services would doubtless be requisitioned, again before the Amir would embar** upon a-definite policy of hostility.
