NORTH CHARLEROI SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION, ADVISES Sgt. William O. Mencer Had Earlier Been Reported Missing In ActionMrs. Anna Mencer, of 604 Fourth street, -North Charleroi, was advised by the War Department that her son, Staff Sergeant William 0. Mencer, had been “killed in action” in the North African war theater last May 21.Sgt. Mencer previously had been listed as “missing in action.” in the communication to the soldier’s mother, the War Department said confirmation of her son’s' death was received from the German government through the International Red Cross.Sgt. Mencer was a radio operator with a bomber crew and had been transferred from a ground crew to the air force on May 10. just 11 days before his death.A graduate of Charleroi High School. Sgt. Mencer enlisted tn the Army Air Forces on Dec. 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor. He was graduated from Scott Field. Ill,, and later from the Army Air base at Orlando, Fla. He wen: overseas to England in September, 1942 and arrived in the North African theater in January of this year..Surviving besides his mother are three brothers, Private Robert Mencer, stationed at Van Doren, Miss.; 'Raymond and Harold Mencer, both at home, and a sister, Mildred Mencer, at home.The official notification read;W ashingtnnMrs. Anna Mencer 604 Fourth SU North CharleroiReport now received from the German government through the Inter* national Red Cross that your son.
