Gillard J r. of J ennings, is one of more than 9,500 U.S. service personnel who provided assistance to the residents on Guam in the aftermath of typhoon Pamela,He is a crew member aboard the destroyer tender USS Dixie, which conducted relief operations ranging from debris clearance to restoration ofpower and utilities.More than 1,650 of Guam’sislanders were left homeless and damage was estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.Gillard’s ship, homeported in S an Diego, Calif., is presently deployed in the Western Pacific as a unit of the U.S . Seventh Fleet.A 1963 graduate of Elton High S chool, he joined the Navy in J une 1963.
