?, * i 4OVERLAND, MO, (A) - Officials of the General Services Administration said this morning the fire at the military personnel records center in Overland, Mo*, remains dangerous but is still being confined to the s ixth floor. v . 'Dr. James Rhodes said large sections of the roof itself have Collapsed, but the fire has not v gone down below the floor of the sixth story. He said officialsare hopeful to contain it at thesixth, but that that was Justconjecture.Jeffery P. Hillelson, regional administrator of the GSA, said yesterday he had hoped the fire, which has burned for nearly 56 hours, could be under control by noon today. But the blaze gained . momentum last night when flames leapt 20 to 30 feet into the sky. driving firemen out of the building and forcing them to use only ladder and snorkeltrucks to combat the fire.* Rhodes said there was no estimate now as to when the fire will be brought under control, bul an jMuristant fire chief at die scene was quoted early today as saying, We hope to be out of here by tomorrow night,Rhodes said the major problem In fighting the fire is getting water to the center of the huge building, which is one block wide and two blocks long.He said firemen have been able to pour a lot of water intothe periphery of the sixth floor, but the most stubborn blaze is in the center of the floor.; Rhodes addpri that the mass of tightly packed military records on the floor, which covers180,000 square feet, has alsobeen a factor in the inability of fire fighters to put out theblaze.Sen. A total of six firemen have sustained minor injuries in fighting the blaze.Security officers have cordoned off the area round the building, and are allowing only police, firemen and government officials inside.Fire fighters and their equip* ment were being rotated to give both men and machines a rest.Volunteers of the American Red Cross and the Salvatjpn Army were providing gallons of orange drink and Ice tea for thirsty firemen. .V/eary firemen stripped to their underclothing in a parking lot near the building. The building was completed in 1956 at a cost of about five million dollars, but officials say It would cost about seven times that much to replace the building now.
