CROWD TO SAYGOODBYE TO THIRTYILOCAL VOLUNTEERSYoung Men Who Left Cedar:Rapids For Jefferson Bar*racks Given Loyal Farewell at Union Station.NUMBER SWELLS TOTAL HEREV»IThe thirty volunteers to the army, who left here last evening for Jefferson Barrack Mo., for assignment to various cam, were honored by the presence of a throng estimated at 1,500 persons at the union passenger station before the departure of the train. Jansa's band and Red Cross nurses aided in making the farewell demonstration for the men a huge t success. Considering the comparatively small number of men who ieft, the demonstration was perhaps the largest and most enthusiastic ever held in Cedar Rapids since the war started. !The train was due to have left at \ 6:50 o'clock but it was 7:20 before it finally pulled out from the union sta- j tion. By that time, the main plat- J form was packed with persons, the | crowd extending into Third avenue. J Jansa’s band was stationed at the north end of the station, and played patriotic and popular selections while the embryo soldiers were being bade farewell. As the train pulled out from the station, The Star Spangled Ban- j ner was played.Young women in Red Cross ini-forms provided for the welfare of the volunteers, by distributing large quantities of post cards, pencils, fruit and candy. Will Weatherwax, Y. M. C. A. worker, went with the men, and had a number of packages which he said would keep them from forgetting they were leaving home. The men were to have reached Davenport lastnight, and remained there until this morning.
