TheNavy Department is not able togo into the matter so thoroughlyas is proposed in the army, butevery man accepted at a navalrecruiting office will be requiredto leave his finger and thumbprints. Records of these takenfrom the usual glass slides, willlie sent to Washington andclassified in the bureau of Navigation, where two civilians willbe employed at a specially authorized salary of $1,800 each, to develop and maintain thesystem. It is apprehended thatmen, already in the navy willhave a prejudice against submitting to this means of identification, and it has been decidedto subject only new recruits to the process, although the record would be valuable as a means ofidentifying the dead or badly in jured when there w-as no otherway of recognition. In the army no such prejudices seem toexist, and the records will Viecompleted as soon as it is possible to obtain them. In thenavy, of course, the system willeventually be completed with the re-enlistment of men whoare not new to be required to leave their finger print records.
