Whenthey want to sin they light a candle and while it burns they can commit any sin and it will be forgiven. They rejoice at a death and mourn at a birth. When one of them dies they have a large feast and “wake” and have the band play some lively piece to keep the devil away. They put the body in a bamboo coffin and tie two polls on each side and four, men take it on their shoulders to the church; there the priest says a few words for which he gets ten pasoes, then they form a procession headed by the band (playing a hot time) and go to the cemetery; there they take the body out and put it in a stone vault, for which they pay two pasoes per month, and if they fail to pay up their rent the body is taken out and thrown on the bone pile and the coffin is kept forfuture use.
