POEM FOR HER SOLDIER BOYMrs. L. D. Blank, of Birdseye, Ind., has sent the following poem to her son, Edward Dow Blank, who is now somewhere in France. He enlisted last October, when he was but 18 years of age. His favorite flowers were roses. The poem is as follows:He left when the roses were blooming, To fight for the red, white and bine;At his home his mother is grieving For the yonth so loyal and true.•Gone from the home of his childhood. Where he never knew sorrow or pain. Will he return to his loved ones When the roses are blooming again? He left when the roses were blooming,In answer to his country's call,To protect the Star Spangled Banner—A duty to one and to all.God gave me the gallant young soldier— And I to my country gave thee; Although my fond heart is yearning: Will you ever come back to me?Will he return—or death claim him.In the land 'way over the sea—While fighting for peace and for freedom, And the love for humanity? When God's holy angel shall summon, And death, then, will be his doom,May Jesus in mercy receive him Where the roses shall ever bloom. The news we long expectedHas reached our homes, perchance, Edward D. has left the stnnd For somewhere now in France.
