HanleyjWhen the guard was called into4 service in October, 1940, Colonel I Hanley left with his outfit for Camp Livingston, La He spenta year there and was transferred to the east coast to organize a transportation district comprisingeight states.As the fighting in Europe grew in intensity he was picked for assignment there. Soon after arriving in England he was assigned to the continent as base trans-portation officer for Normandy. The scope of his assignment gradually broadened as the Allied armies advanced until last January he was made chief of transportation. which includes the United Kingdom and all the liberated countries of Europe. |On D-day he flew to Great Britain and after working for sev-; era! weeks in cross channel oper-; ations was transferred to France.] One of his main duties was moving supplies up to the front lines .on the western front.Colonel Hanley also wears the nation s fourth highest decoration, the legion of merit, for his organization activities in the Nor- j mandy base section from August 18, 1944, to May 9, 1945.
